hDC Ships Express Meter 1.0:
Application Management and Monitoring for All Windows Networks
Express Meter Minimizes Expenses and Eases Access for Windows Workgroups
Redmond, WA -- hDC Computer Corporation has begun shipping Express
Meter, the most comprehensive and sophisticated application metering and
management system for Windows networks. Express Meter is a Windows
application that works with any PC network to measure and control the
usage of DOS or Windows applications installed on the network and to
provide easy access to those applications.
Express Meter Maximizes Application Usage to the Legal Limit
Microsoft, Lotus, WordPerfect, and many other vendors of productivity
software for DOS and Windows sell licenses to their applications on a
"concurrent use" basis.
This means that corporations can save money by buying licenses for only
the number of copies of an application that will be in use simultaneously,
rather than for the entire population of potential users.
Surveys indicate that the maximum number of simultaneous users of a
program on a network is often less than one third the number of
workstations connected. Thus, using Express Meter could save two-thirds
the software licensing cost , potentially several thousand dollars,
compared to purchasing a license for each potential user.
Application Librarian's Metering Maximizes Implementation Convenience
Express Meter's metering component, called Application Librarian, works
with any Windows shell, including the Windows Program Manager, hDC Power
Launcher, or Norton Desktop for Windows. It allows network administrators
to measure the usage of applications to determine the proper number of
concurrent usage licenses to purchase. They can then ensure that users
fulfill these license agreements by optionally preventing use beyond the
number specified by the system administrator.
Application Librarian operates on any PC network, including Novell
Netware, Microsoft's LAN Manager and MS-NET, Banyan's Vines, Artisoft
Lantastic, and the forthcoming Windows for Workgroups. Thus, corporations
with mixed-network environments can use a single metering solution for
all of their Windows users.
Application Librarian offers a wide variety of reporting features giving
network administrators as much usage information as they require,
organized by user or application. And because it is a Windows
application, usage information can be transferred to other
applications via the clipboard.
Application Librarian does not require a Terminate and Stay Resident
(TSR) component on the workstation or the creation of application
"aliases", further simplifying installation and debugging.
Application Librarian also offers virus checking: It will optionally
check programs for viruses before launching them.
Express Meter's Network Menuing Balances Control and Flexibility
Express Meter's menuing component, Windows Express offers users a
simple, inviting folder metaphor for accessing applications and
documents. The menus offer an icon, a hot key association, a name, and
a description for each menu item. Choosing a menu item can either start
a command or summon another menu. Each menu can be private to a user
or can be provided by the system administrator, shared over the network
by one or more users.
Windows Express, gives system administrators complete control in
determining how users access applications. They can offer beginning
users very clear, limited options to launch specific applications while
allowing experienced or sophisticated users competely flexibility to
launch any application accessible to them on the network.
Enhanced Commands
The commands on provided by Express Meter through Windows Express are
based on hDC's Enhanced Command technology, developed for hDC Power
Launcher, named Editors' Choice among Windows desktops in the September
29, 1992 issue of PC Magazine. They offer users great flexibility and
power for operating Windows and Windows applications. An Enhanced
Command can set the position, size, caption, icon, and initial
directory of an application. They can also run a macro, send keystrokes
or DDE messages to an application, make a DLL call, or run a script to
control an application, a group of applications, or Windows itself.
They can even include any combination of these elements.
